Todd Doobrow’s journey into financial planning began in an unexpected place: a middle school classroom. A simple stock-tracking project sparked his fascination with financial markets, planting the seed for a lifelong passion that still drives him today. When the project wrapped up, his father gave him $100 to invest in one of the stocks he had tracked—a stock Todd still owns.
But like many successful entrepreneurs, Todd’s path to success wasn’t a straight line. After building a career working with professional athletes, a personal tragedy shifted everything: His father-in-law, a Birmingham-based periodontist, passed away, leaving Todd and his wife managing two dental practices—along with a “mountain of debt.”
Over the next seven years, Todd tackled the businesses head-on—streamlining operations, navigating challenges, and eventually selling both practices. That hands-on experience gave him a firsthand look at the financial struggles medical and dental professionals face and uncovered a deeper mission: to help others avoid those same hurdles.
“Our accountant grabbed me by the back of the neck and said, ‘Look, Todd, one of these doctors who you thought had the world by the throat didn’t have the basics covered—that’s who you need to work with,’” Todd recalls. That advice became the foundation of Todd’s advisory practice, where he now serves physicians, dentists, and business owners, helping them build more confident financial futures.
The Turning Point: Finding RFG
For Todd, joining RFG Advisory was the turning point that allowed him to build the business he had always envisioned. After working for years in the investment division of an insurance company, Todd realized he needed more freedom to serve clients his way, to build without barriers, and to focus on what truly mattered.
“I was nervous about transitioning,” Todd admits. “The company I was with before was a national name. I thought my clients would leave me.”
But the opposite happened.
“When I explained to my clients why I was making the move and how it would benefit them, not only did they come with me, but they started referring others,” Todd says.
