Surprise Tariffs Shake Up Markets

Welcome to another edition of our Market Commentary with RFG Advisory’s Chief Investment Officer, Rick Wedell!

Markets have had a tough few days after a series of tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico were announced late Monday afternoon. Collectively, these tariffs should add roughly 0.7% to core inflation, and markets are concerned that the broadening trade war may lower economic growth by up to 1% in the United States. This is causing a flight to safety as bonds rally in response to slower growth expectations. In this edition of Market Commentary, Rick breaks down how global markets are trending year-to-date, explains the fear factor entering the markets, looks back at the history of market volatility, and highlights our playbook for when markets get choppy.
